Every Halloween, the door at the end of Crowhollow Lane is left unlatched. Behind it is a corridor, and in the corridor are twenty doors.

Each door asks you something. Choose an answer and it will swing open whether you’re right or wrong — the house is polite like that. But it is also keeping count.

Doors X, XV and XX are sealed. A sealed door opens only for a guest who has chosen rightly at least four times in every five so far. If the seal holds, the corridor folds back on itself and you’ll walk the last stretch again. Make it through all twenty and the house will decide what you are.

The house has been counting, and it doesn’t care for your number. The candles gutter, the floor tilts, and the corridor folds back on itself.

Beyond the twentieth door

One candle for every door in the corridor. The house lit the ones you chose rightly, and snuffed the rest.
